Amazon profit cut in half, sales up 34%; shares up on forecast

Amazon.com Inc. late Thursday reported its profit dropped by half, even
as sales rose 34%, as the company lost the benefit of a large tax gain
it had a year ago and saw its operating margin narrow.

NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks turned cautiously higher on Wednesday, after a
weak manufacturing survey revived hopes that the Federal Reserve, which
will unveil a decision on interest rates this afternoon, may take less
of a tough stance on inflation.


U.S. economy grew at 3.5% annual rate in fourth quarter, grew 3.4% in 2006, Reuters reports.

U.S. stocks rise as deals, Intel lift spirits

NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks were cautiously rising on Monday, as falling
crude oil prices and enthusiasm over new technologies from chip-making
companies Intel Corp. and IBM, together with a flurry of merger news,
helped offset caution ahead of the Federal Reserve's two-day meeting on
interest rates.
