NEW YORK
Shares of Yahoo Inc. surged Friday on reports it was in talks about a
possible combination with Microsoft, but gave up nearly half the gains
late in the day after a new report said the talks were no longer
ongoing.

U.S. stocks opened higher Friday, as merger news - including a report
that Microsoft Corp. wants to discuss buying Yahoo Inc., and news that
Reuters Group Plc has also been approached by a potential buyer --
overshadowed a weak jobs report.
