U.S. stocks close mixed; Dow down 31 points
NEW YORK
U.S. stocks closed mixed Tuesday amid conflicting signals on whether the
Federal Reserve would move again to address the credit crunch roiling
the financial markets.
Rally in short-term bonds halted after key meeting
NEW YORK
Short-term Treasury bills halted a 6-day rally on Tuesday, sending their
yields higher, after a special meeting between Federal Reserve Chairman
Ben Bernanke, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Senate Banking
Committee Chairman Chris Dodd failed to signal an imminent rate cut.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said he's "absolutely" prepared to
use all the tools at his disposal to address the credit crisis in the
U.S. financial system, according to Sen. Chris Dodd, chairman of the
Senate Banking Committee.
Target profit up; customers still unfazed by economic challenges

Target Corp., weathering a choppy environment for consumer spending,
posted a 12.6% hike in second-quarter profit on Tuesday but sounded a
cautious tone for the rest of the year.
Tribune shareholders approve $8.2 billion deal

Shareholders of Tribune Co. overwhelmingly approved, as expected, an
$8.2 billion deal Tuesday taking the parent of the Chicago Tribune and
Los Angeles Times private, the company said.
